NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WEDNESDAY 12-27-2023

The weather pattern is going to become more active in the coming days. The first of many storm systems is currently in the Pacific Ocean headed this way. You can spot it spinning in the satellite loop below.

This system will bring showers Friday night and intermittently through the day Saturday. I've posted the computer projected rain totals through Sunday morning below.

The next system is more challenging to forecast. The computer projections diverge with some bringing the storm overhead, while others push it south. I'm leaning towards the southern route, though we could still see some stray showers or light rain Sunday 12/31 into early Monday 1/1.

Yet another system will arrive for the middle of next week. Computer projections are more consistent with this storm. They show rain arriving Wednesday 1/3 and lasting into Thursday 1/4.

Lastly, long range projections show a possible 4th system by Saturday 1/6 into Sunday 1/7. Obviously this is far away, so there will be be some adjustments to the forecast.

I'll keep an eye on the scenario and bring more updates as the data becomes more concrete.

SAN DIEGO RAIN TOTALS: THURSDAY 12-21-2023 TO FRIDAY 12-22-2023

Isolated showers and downpours are still possible through 6 PM today as the core of the storm system passes to our south. Here are the rain totals from last night into this morning. I'll post the final numbers later this evening.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SATURDAY 12-16-2023

A large storm system is churning off the California coast. You can easily spot it on the satellite loop below.

This system will weaken and move to our north, pulling some moisture into our area for the start of the workweek. An occasional shower will be possible intermittently Monday through Wednesday.

A better chance for rain will arrive when a stronger system dives out of the Gulf of Alaska and settles into the region. Periods of rain and isolated downpours will be possible Wednesday night through Friday.

I've included the projected rain amounts through Friday night. Totals will range from 1 to 3" across the area. These numbers will be greatly affected by the track of the system, so I'll keep an eye on it and bring updates when needed.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 11-27-2023

A small and weak storm system is spiraling off the Northern California coast (seen in the satellite loop below). This will settle down into our area on Wednesday and bring a few showers.

Some patchy drizzle or light rain will linger on Thursday, especially in the mountains. Another small system will clip us on Friday and bring a quick chance for showers, especially early in the day. The rain chance will diminish by Friday evening.

I've posted the computer projection for rain totals through Friday evening. Coastal and inland areas should only see around 0.25" of rainfall, but isolated areas in the mountains will see 1" to 1.5".

WEATHER UPDATE: WEDNESDAY 11-15-2023

Periods of showers will persist through the rest of today. A stray shower is possible Thursday (30%), however, the majority of the day will be dry.

Another chance for showers (70%) arrives Friday evening into Saturday morning. Lastly, there is also a slight chance (40%) for rain Saturday evening/night as the storm system exits.

I've posted the computer projections for total rainfall through Sunday morning below:

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SATURDAY 11-11-2023

Well, it's finally time to start updating the blog again. Rain season has begun!

El Niño is strong with equatorial Pacific waters being very warm. Subsurface temperatures are also warm, which means El Niño will persist through winter. This typically equates to wet conditions throughout Southern California. You can track water temperatures in the El Niño section of my website

The computer forecasts have been pretty terrible with this upcoming storm system. This usually happens during the transitional autumn months leading into winter. It seems like they are starting to become more consistent.

There is a storm system in the Gulf Of Alaska that will deepen once a piece of energy migrates out of the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. You can see it as a blob of blue in the satellite loop below.

This system will settle off the coast of California and give us a few bouts of rain from Wednesday evening (11/15) through Saturday morning (11/18).

It appears that the best chance for substantial rain will be when the core of the system passes Friday into early Saturday.

This is still far away and a lot can change, so I will definitely will have another update once the data is more concrete. I've posted the current projections for rain totals through Saturday morning, which show us getting around an inch of rain.

TROPICAL STORM HILARY: UPDATED 9 AM SUNDAY 8-20-2023

As expected, Hilary has weakened to a Tropical Storm. It will still bring rain and intermittent downpours through the day and early tonight. Showers will dissipate by 7 AM Monday. Rain totals still look to be 1.5" to 2.5" for coastal and inland areas. Mountains will be 3" to 6".

Winds will be strongest from noon to 8 PM in the mountains and desert, where gusts could reach 65 mph. Winds will strongest on the coast and inland from 3 to 10 PM, where gusts could reach 45 mph.

HURRICANE HILARY: UPDATED 1 PM SATURDAY 8-19-2023

The satellite imagery below shows how the once well-defined eye wall of Hilary has now collapsed. In addition, Hilary has broadened and looks more ragged on the edges. These are all signs of a rapidly weakening hurricane.

Regardless, this system is still headed our way and the pace has accelerated. Most computer forecasts (shown below) have the storm weakening to a Tropical Storm by the time to passes overhead midday on Sunday. The real threat from Hilary will be the heavy rain and potential for flash flooding.

Showers will develop to the east in the desert and mountains this evening and tonight. Those showers will migrate westward early Sunday morning. Periods of rain and downpours will then arrive midday as the core of Hilary passes overhead. This will occur between 12-5 PM.

Lingering showers an isolated downpours will still be possible Sunday evening and Sunday night as the storm exits the region. Most rain will be gone Monday morning.

I've posted the official track from the National Hurricane Center and also the computer projected rain totals from Hilary. San Diego should see 1.5 to 2.5", though in the mountains, totals will range from 4" to 7" (isolated areas could get more).

As always, check with the National Weather Service San Diego for all the latest warnings and advisories.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: HURRICANE HILARY UPDATE, 8 PM THURSDAY 8-17-2023

Hurricane Hilary currently has winds of 120 mph. The eye is well-defined with some healthy convection around the center. It's looking a little ragged on the edges, which is usually a sign of some shearing.

Most of the computer data has it moving along the western coastline of the Baja. Hilary will continue to weaken as it moves into colder waters.

Some outer bands of rain could reach San Diego on Saturday. A quick shower or downpour could pop up at any point, though it won't be a washout.

A better chance for rain arrives Sunday as the core of the storm moves closer. The best chance for more consistent periods of rain and downpours will arrive Sunday evening/night through early Monday.

As with any tropical system, rain totals will be greatly impacted by the track of the storm. The slightest shift could reduce the computer projected rain totals I've posted below. Right now, the projection shows over 2" of total rain in San Diego.

Although most of this rain will quickly rush back into the ocean, it will be nice to get some rainfall back into the area.

I'll post an update tomorrow or Saturday morning, especially if it looks like there will be a change in storm track.
