WEATHER UPDATE: SATURDAY 3-28-2020

A weak storm system is drifting southwestward off the coast of Northern California. It will pass our area late Sunday and bring a slight chance for a shower or two Sunday evening into Sunday night (40%). Snow levels will be above 6,000 feet.

Afterwards, we are heading into an extended period of dry and mild weather. Temperatures will gradually warm into next weekend, where highs could climb into the upper 70s possibly low 80s. This pattern will persist through the first week of April.

Long range computer forecasts are hinting at a shift in the weather pattern by the second week in April. We could see rain return during this time period. I'll keep an eye on it and bring more updates.

WEATHER UPDATE: THURSDAY 3-26-2020

Isolated showers will move through the area this morning, then scattered showers will develop this afternoon and evening as the core of this system moves past our area. Showers will dwindle by early Friday morning.

Snow levels will drop to 4,000 feet, so local mountains will receive snow. I've posted projected snow totals below, which shows the highest mountains in San Diego County receiving a few inches of snow (1-4"), while taller peaks to the north in San Bernardino could receive more (3-8").

You can find the latest winter weather advisories at the San Diego National Weather Service:

https://www.weather.gov/sgx/

You can check for road conditions at the Caltrans website:

https://roads.dot.ca.gov/

Most of the weekend looks dry, though there is a slight chance for isolated showers on Sunday (40%) as a weak system passes our area.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SATURDAY 3-21-2020

Our next chance for rain is currently a few hundred miles off the California coast. You can see it on the satellite image below. It's fairly weak and doesn't have much moisture, so the rain potential is somewhat limited.

Showers will move into our area by Sunday night. The chance for showers will persist through midday Monday, then most areas should be dry by Monday afternoon/evening. Snow levels will range from 6,000 to 7,000 feet, so local mountains won't see much snow.

A passing isolated shower is possible Tuesday and Wednesday, though it's looking like the majority of both days should be dry.

Another system will dive out of the Gulf of Alaska and into our area on Thursday. Scattered showers will be possible through the day on Thursday. This will be a colder system, so snow levels could drop as low as 4,000 feet.

I've posted the projected five-day rain totals through next Thursday on the map below. Right now, it's looking like most areas will receive less than an inch of rain. Isolated areas, especially in the mountains, could get more.

These next two systems will keep our temperatures generally below normal for the next 7-10 days, though the are signs of milder weather heading into the start of April. It's not dramatic, but a trend to watch on the coming days.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SATURDAY 3-14-2020

The core of the next storm system is drifting southward off the coast on Northern California. It will bring our area more rain for next workweek.

Showers will first arrive Monday evening into Monday night. Intermittent showers and isolated downpours will be possible on-and-off Tuesday, Wednesday and early Thursday.

Snow levels will steadily drop as the core of this system passes overhead. The highest peaks in San Diego county should get some accumulating snow.
  • Monday evening: 8,000 to 9,000 feet
  • Tuesday: 4,500 to 5,500 feet
  • Wednesday: 4,000 to 5,000 feet
  • Thursday: 4,000 to 5,000 feet
There isn't as much moisture with this system compared to last week's storm. Three day rain totals should be around an inch of rainfall with some isolated areas in the mountains approaching two inches. I've posted projected rain and snow totals through Thursday below. It looks like the Sierras will receive a lot of precipitation, which is always great news!

Yet another system could bring more rain to our area by next weekend!

WEATHER UPDATE: WEDNESDAY 3-11-2020

The core of the storm system remains off the coast of Southern California. You can spot it in the satellite loop below - it almost looks like the eye of a hurricane.

Moisture is being pushed ahead of this system. This moisture will wrap around the storm as it tracks south of our area. This will spark off more showers and isolated downpours starting Thursday morning. Periods of rain will persist through Thursday. Showers will become more isolated Thursday night into Friday. A renegade shower could pop up early Saturday, but most of the day looks dry.

The track of this system is key to the rain totals. The computer forecasts continue to perform terribly. I've posted two projections below. One pushes the rain mostly to the mountains and eastward/northward. I still think coastal and inland areas could see a half inch to an inch. Mountains and areas eastward could see 1 to 3", where thunderstorms are more likely.

I'm still watching another system that will move in late Monday into Tuesday next week. This will bring more showers and significantly lower snow levels.

WEATHER UPDATE: SUNDAY 3-8-2020

Our next storm system is spinning right off the Southern California Coast. You can spot it on the satellite loop below. Showers will develop late Monday afternoon and into Monday night. Rain with embedded downpours will be possible through the day on Tuesday. Showers will become more isolated heading into Wednesday.

It's not surprising that computer forecasts can't agree with this system. At this point, I'm going to rely on global models like the ECMWF (Euro) and GFS for this storm. They usually have better data over the Pacific Ocean. Euro is showing the most rainfall compared to the rest of the computer forecasts. It's showing 1-3" across the area.

I've posted the projected rain totals from the GFS computer model. It's showing 0.5" to 1.5" across the area, which seems somewhat reasonable though perhaps a tad conservative. It's a tough call considering that a slight shift in the storm track could dramatically increase or decrease those totals. I'm going to keep watching the data and will bring more updates if needed.

Snow levels will remain high with this system, so I'm not expecting snow in local mountains.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED TUESDAY 3-3-2020

I'm keeping an eye on a couple storm systems that could bring rain to San Diego. The first will clip the area Saturday into early Sunday. The moisture with this system is limited, so most areas in San Diego county will only receive about a quarter inch of rainfall. Snow levels will stay fairly high with this system, so I'm not expecting any snow in local mountains.

The next system will be slower and track in off the Pacific (upper level map below). This one has more potential to bring significant rain to the area next workweek - roughly Tuesday to Thursday. It's still very early to get excited about this system. Long term computer forecasts tend to be unreliable heading into springtime. A slight shift in the track of the system will have a dramatic impact on the rain potential (see last weekend?). I'll keep an eye and bring updates in the coming days. We definitely need the rainfall!
