NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED TUESDAY 1-30-2024

Our next storm system is developing in the Pacific Ocean. You can spot it spiraling in the satellite loop below. A piece of energy will dive down the backside of this system and into our area on Thursday.

Rain with isolated downpours are likely through most of Thursday, then showers will become more intermittent on Friday. I'm expecting most of the rain to be gone by Saturday morning.

Snow levels won't drop as low as I earlier anticipated, though some of the higher peaks in San Diego County could see some snow. Snow levels will start at 8,000 feet Thursday, then drop to 5,500 by Friday.

I've posted the computer projected rain and snow totals through Saturday morning below.

Another storm system will bring more rain to the area for next Monday and Tuesday. We could see some patchy drizzle ahead of it on Sunday, though most of the day looks dry. I'll keep an eye on it and bring more details later.

Afterwards, it's looking like another dry and warm pattern will build for the middle of the month - very similar to what we're seeing now.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED 1-24-2024

A small front will clip the area on Thursday and give us a quick chance for a shower or two. Otherwise, most of the day looks dry.

I'm much more interested in the pattern change in the coming days. We will first get to enjoy a nice period of dry and warm weather from Saturday, 1/27 through Wednesday, 1/31. You can see the warm air surging northward in computer projection below.

Afterwards, a powerful cold front will blast through the area, bringing rain back on Thursday, 2/1. Cold air will then funnel into the area for the first week of February. Periods of rain will be possible from Friday, 2/2 through Monday, 2/5. We could also see an isolated thunderstorm as the core of the system settles overhead. Snow levels will also drop to the lowest levels so far this winter.

This is still very far into the future, so some of the details on timing will change. However, long range computer forecasts have been very consistent with the upcoming cold snap, so be prepared!

I'll have more updates in the coming days.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WEDNESDAY 1-17-2024

A large storm system is churning a couple thousand miles off the California coast (seen in the satellite loop below). Pieces of this system will move over our area in the coming days and bring periods of rainfall.

The first round will arrive Saturday, where light showers will be possible, especially late in the day. A few more showers will linger into early Sunday.

A better chance for more steady moderate to heavy rain will arrive on Monday. This rain will linger into early Tuesday.

Rain totals will range from 1.0 to 2.0", Saturday through Tuesday. I've posted the computer projections below.

Afterwards, it looks like a blocking pattern will set up, which will keep us dry for the remainder of January. Temperatures will also climb into the 70s inland.

SAN DIEGO 2023 RECAP: RAINFALL AND TEMPERATURES

2023 was a cool and wet year in San Diego. Every month except for December had temperatures that were below average. Last rain season was a wet one, with January and March bringing some big numbers. We also had a healthy rainfall in August thanks to Tropical Storm Hilary. Total rainfall was 14.43".

Here are the monthly numbers:

Average Temperature Departure From Normal Total Rainfall Departure From Normal
Jan 55.8 -2.6 5.14 3.16
Feb 55.1 -3.9 1.78 -0.42
Mar 56.8 -3.9 3.97 2.51
Apr 60.2 -2.7 0.12 -0.53
May 62.5 -2.3 0.09 -0.19
Jun 65.3 -1.9 0.03 -0.02
Jul 70.4 -0.3 T -0.08
Aug 71.9 -0.5 1.84 1.83
Sep 70.9 -0.8 0.05 -0.07
Oct 67.4 -0.7 0.01 -0.49
Nov 61.8 -0.9 0.61 -0.18
Dec 59.2 1.3 0.79 -0.88
Total 63.1 -1.6 14.43 4.64

The map below shows the total precipitation across the state.

Most of California saw above average precipitation (rain and snow).

Part of the Sierras had record breaking precipitation, as seen on the map below.

Temperatures were generally near or below normal, though there were some patches inland that had above normal temps.

No annual temperature records were broken. In the past we've seen record warm temperatures, but not in 2023.

Here is a map for precipitation across the country.

You can see that the Northern Rockies and the High Plains of the Midwest were also wet. The Southeast and Northeast also had a lot of rain.

These regions also saw some record-breaking precipitation.

Temperatures were warm for the central and eastern parts of the country.

New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Florida and the Northeast saw record-breaking temperatures.

Here are the monthly rain totals across San Diego County.
