SAN DIEGO RAIN TOTALS: THURSDAY 1-31-2019
NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED TUESDAY 1-29-2019
The picture is becoming more clear as our next storm system approaches our area. You can spot it at the top of the satellite loop below. It's small but potent. This will bring rain to our area starting midday Thursday. An isolated thunderstorm is possible, but the chances are pretty slim. Rain should exit the area Thursday night. Snow levels will remain above 9,000 feet for this event.
A bigger and more powerful system will then move in for the weekend. As expected, the Euro computer model did a much better job at predicting this scenario. Showers should arrive Friday night into Saturday morning. Then moderate to heavy rain showers will be possible on-and-off through the day on Saturday. Snow levels could dip as low as 7,500 feet. I'd plan on hanging out indoors on Saturday.
A lingering isolated shower will still be possible on Sunday, though it shouldn't be a washout. Then a third system will move in Sunday night into early Monday. Rain showers will be possible during this time, though moisture will be limited with this system. Snow levels will be the lowest with this system, where they could drop to 5,000 feet.
Rain totals for all three systems will be significant. I've posted a computer projection below. Coastal and inland areas could see 2.0 to 3.0" of rainfall. Mountains will exceed 3.0". Again, the majority of this will fall with Saturday's storm.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SUNDAY 1-27-2019
The weather pattern is slowly shifting. A small storm system is drifting out of the Gulf of Alaska. Computer forecasts have been very inconsistent with this storm except for the Euro. It has been showing rain in our area on Thursday, which I think is a plausible scenario. I'll keep an eye on it and bring more updates if the path changes.
The Euro has also consistently shown more rain arriving Saturday. This system has more potential for heavier rain and lower snow levels. I'll also be watching this scenario and bring more updates.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SUNDAY 1-20-2019
Clouds have moved into our area today as a storm system approaches from the north (seen on the satellite loop below). This system will push a front through Southern California tonight and bring us a brief chance for a couple showers. It will also bring cooler air, so get ready for some chilly nights!
Afterward, a blocking pattern will develop in the Pacific (indicated by the red blob in the second map below). This will prevent any storm systems from moving into the West Coast. Long range computer forecasts are hinting at an erosion of this pattern by the first week of February (seen on the third map below). I'll be keeping an eye on this and will bring updates in the coming days.

WEATHER UPDATE: 8 AM TUESDAY 1-15-2019
The upper atmosphere remains energized, so the chance for rain will persist through Thursday.
Currently a batch of light rain is moving across the area. This should dissipate by midday. Then another round of showers will move in this afternoon and especially tonight. A few showers will linger on and off through Wednesday, but it won't be a complete washout. The last round of rain will then arrive on Thursday. Friday and this weekend look dry.
Snow levels will remain high during this event (above 8,000 feet), so local mountains shouldn't get any snow. Though the higher peaks in the San Bernardino mountains should get several inches.
Long range computer forecasts continue to show a blocking pattern developing next Monday. This means we will see an extended period of dry and warm weather. Sometimes you can get a storm to sneak in under these ridges, but more than likely the last couple weeks of January will be dry.

Showers return to the area Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. More substantial rainfall will arrive Thursday as a more powerful storm system approaches the area.

SAN DIEGO 2018 RECAP: RAINFALL & TEMPERATURES
2018 was warmer than normal with below average rainfall (2.69" below normal). The totals for the year were very similar to 2017, which was also a warm and dry year. Summer of 2018 was brutally hot, where the average temperature was 5.1 above normal in July and 6.5 above normal in August. May was the only month where temperatures were slightly below average.
Here are the rain totals across the region for each month.
California wasn't alone - the entire western third of the U.S. was warm and dry. 2018 was the hottest on record for parts of Arizona and New Mexico.
Conversely, it was cold and wet for the Upper Midwest. Northern Iowa, southern Minnesota and southern Wisconsin saw record rainfall.
Remnants of hurricanes and tropical storms brought record rainfall to the Mid-Atlantic region. Temperatures were generally above average across the entire East Coast and Deep South.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED TUESDAY 1-8-2019
The turbulent weather pattern will persist for the next several days. This will bring us a few chances for rain. A front will pass our area Wednesday night into early Thursday. This front is weakening, so the rain chances are very low (less than 20%).
A much better chance for rain arrives Friday night into Saturday. Showers and isolated downpours will be possible through Saturday afternoon, then we should be dry Saturday night and most of Sunday.
Yet another system will move in Monday and Tuesday. We could even see more rain later next workweek (possibly Thursday)
This active pattern won't last forever. Long range computer forecasts continue to show a warm and dry pattern heading this way starting the week of Monday, January 21. You can spot the blocking pattern in the map below - indicated by the red.
So we'll take all the rain we can get! I'll have more updates in the coming days.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED FRIDAY 1-4-2019
**Updated 6 AM Friday to give timing on rainfall**
The next storm system is staying on track and should bring rain to our area Saturday into early Sunday. You can spot it racing out of the Gulf of Alaska in the satellite loop below. An isolated shower is possible throughout Saturday (30% chance), however, the heaviest rain will be from 8 PM Saturday to 9 AM Sunday (90% chance). Afterward, a stray shower is possible in the mountains, otherwise, Sunday looks dry.
Unfortunately, the energy will split around Southern California, so the heaviest rain will be north and south of us (projected rainfall on the map below). It's looking like we'll see around a half inch or less of total rainfall.
Snow levels will start at 7,000-8,000 feet Saturday night, then drop to 4,500 to 5,500 by Sunday afternoon as the storm exits.
I'll keep an eye on this system and if the track shifts, I'll update the forecast. I'm also watching for the potential of more rain by the middle of next week. Stay tuned.
