A few showers and cooler weather could possibly head this way in about a week.
The European (ECMWF) computer forecast model has been hinting at an inside slider heading our way for this upcoming Sunday (10/4) and Monday (10/5). You can see the track marked by arrows on the maps below. The Canadian computer model has a similar system, but moves things a little slower.
This type of system dives southward into our area quickly, plus, its' track prevents it from tapping into much moisture. They usually result in a few showers, cooler weather and windy conditions (especially in the mountains).
Unfortunately, this system might drift too far east. In fact, the ECMWF ensemble pushes it a little farther east than the operational model. In addition, it isn't as pronounced. It would be nice to see it dive a little farther south.
Regardless, this is definitely something to watch in the coming days. At the very least, we could get a brief break from the heat on Sunday and Monday, though gusty winds could equate to fire danger.

WEATHER UPDATE: 7 AM TUESDAY 9/22/2015
There is a 20% chance for an isolated shower in the mountains today. Rain chances for coastal and inland areas are less than 20%. Looking at the extended computer forecasts, I don't see rain for at least another week.
WEATHER UPDATE: 8 PM MONDAY 9/21/2015
As expected, most of the heavy rainfall will miss us to the east (see the 84 hour forecast rainfall accumulations below). We still have a chance for isolated showers and possibly a quick downpour tonight, however, it won't amount to much. I'm expecting the Flood Watches to the east to be lifted later tonight due to the decreased threat for heavy rain.
Unfortunately, we'll have to wait for the next storm system to arrive for a significant rainfall. Luckily, we have El Nino conditions, so it might come in a week or two!
8 PM Monday to 10 AM Tuesday
Isolated showers and maybe a downpour are possible. (40%)

Patchy coastal fog/drizzle.

WEATHER UPDATE: 10 AM MONDAY 9/21/2015
Clouds have moved into our skies this morning, which is welcomed after yesterday's insane heat! These clouds are from showers down in Mexico. Those showers will generally stay south of our area and will dissipate over the next few hours. There is a slight chance that some of those showers could clip the far southern areas of San Diego County.
Computer forecasts are still showing the bulk of the rain missing us to the east. In fact, the latest data this morning is downplaying the rain potential even more.
Although a renegade shower could pop up this afternoon, I'm expecting the best chances for rain to arrive this evening/tonight through early tomorrow - roughly 8 PM tonight to 2 PM Tuesday. A few showers and isolated downpours will be possible during this time period. Don't be surprised if you hear a rumble or two of thunder. Skies will begin to clear out by Tuesday evening.

SAN DIEGO WEATHER UPDATE: 9 PM SUNDAY 9/20/2015
I think this animation sums it up nicely. It shows the accumulated rainfall for the next 84 hours. The heaviest rain is still expected to miss us to the east. Isolated showers/downpours are possible Monday, especially in the afternoon and evening. The chance for isolated showers persists into Tuesday.
Heavier rains will be possible in the mountains and eastward, where a Flood Watch is in effect. Be sure to check with the National Weather Service for the latest: www.weather.gov.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SUNDAY 9/20/2015
Summary
This morning's data shows a slightly different scenario with this storm system. They have slowed things down, however, it still looks like the brunt of the storm will miss us to the east.
Timing
Sunday: Mostly dry and sunny. An isolated shower could pop up in the evening/overnight period (20%).
Monday: Showers and isolated thunderstorms/downpours are possible, especially in the late afternoon and evening. The rain chance lingers into the night (60%).
Tuesday: Isolated showers/downpours are still possible, especially early in the day (40%).
Discussion
The latest satellite imagery shows occasionally robust convection around the center of the storm, though it's still fairly disorganized.
Computer forecast tracks move the center of the storm right along the southeast California and Arizona state line.
This storm will be moving into cooler water and a sheared environment, so I don't expect it to strengthen. The computers agree.
The system is far enough away that it shouldn't affect our weather today. In fact, it will be sunny and hot, which is typical ahead of a tropical system (subsidence). We'll have some cirrus clouds move in later in the day...it could make for a nice sunset!
You can see from the computer forecast 48 hour rain totals that the torrential rains will miss us to the east. Regardless, we still have the chance for a couple heavy downpours (fingers crossed).

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SATURDAY 9/19/2015
Things are becoming more clear as this next system approaches the area. Latest data is moving this thing faster and a little farther east. This means that the highest rain totals will be east of San Diego. Regardless, we will have a chance for rain and isolated downpours.
A random shower could pop up on Sunday, then scattered showers and isolated downpours will be possible Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Most of the rain will be gone by Tuesday afternoon. Rain totals will range from 0.2-1.0" for coastal and inland regions, while the mountains and areas eastward could see 1.0-2.0".
You can see the latest computer forecast tracks:
Most guidance keeps this thing below tropical storm strength. After the next 24 hours, it will enter into cooler water and a sheared environment (the upper level storm will chew it up), so it will be tough for it to become a named system. But it will be close!

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED FRIDAY 9/18/2015
As expected, the computer forecasts are all over the place with this next chance for rain. This is typical with a tropical system (current satellite loop below). Most of the variance comes with timing. Some forecasts have rain as early as Monday, while others delay it until Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday seems to be a safe bet, however, keep a close eye to the forecast because there will definitely be some adjustments.
Track will also be key. If this thing drifts east too much, we'll get less rain. I'll continue to bring more updates this weekend.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WED 9/16/2015
Southern California could see more rain near the start of next workweek (Monday/Tuesday). A storm system will get cut off from the jet stream and meander hundreds of miles off the West Coast. In the meantime, some energy will move northward from the tropics. Both of these features could merge together and move into our region.
There are a lot of factors that could affect the timing and track of this system, so rain isn't guaranteed yet. However, multiple computer forecasts are starting to show this scenario, so it's definitely worth watching in the coming days. I'll have more updates soon.

SAN DIEGO WEATHER UPDATE: 3 PM TUESDAY 9/15/2015
Most of the steady rain is now pushing out of the southern portions of San Diego County. A stray isolated shower will be possible for the rest of this evening and tonight, however, the heaviest rain has now exited the region. I'll post rain totals later this evening. Until then, you can find them on the Rain Totals section of this website:

SAN DIEGO WEATHER UPDATE: 8 AM TUESDAY 9/15/2015
Scattered showers will pass the area today from 8 AM to 2 PM. Embedded within the showers will be isolated downpours. Afterwards, extremely isolated showers will be possible from 2 PM today to 9 AM Wednesday. Rain totals will range from 0.1" to 1.0" with some areas in the mountains receiving more.
SAN DIEGO WEATHER UPDATE: 9 PM MONDAY 9/14/15
After looking at the latest data, this storm system doesn't look as impressive. Regardless, there is still a chance for showers and isolated downpours late tonight and through Tuesday. A rumble or two of thunder is also possible. The rain chances diminish by Wednesday morning.
NEXT CHANCE FOR RAIN SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SUNDAY 9/13/2015
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible from Monday afternoon into Tuesday.
The air will be warm and humid, which makes the atmosphere unstable. You can see the SFC CAPE levels (instability parameter) on the map below. A weak disturbance in the upper atmosphere will pass the area and spark the formation of showers and isolated thunderstorms.
The strongest storms will bring heavy downpours and lightning/thunder. These storms will be hit-and-miss, so not every area will see the heavy rain. Regardless, you should be prepared for the possibility of poor driving conditions during the Monday evening commute.
A stray shower is possible Monday morning, however, the best chances for rain will be from 3 PM Monday through 8 AM Tuesday. Another round of showers and thunderstorms could again pop up on Tuesday afternoon.
