SAN DIEGO RAIN TOTALS: FRIDAY 12-30-2016 TO SATURDAY 12-31-2016
Here are the updated totals Sunday morning.
NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED THURSDAY 12-29-2016
Intermittent showers will be possible through the day on Friday as a storm system drifts overhead. More showers will arrive on Saturday with a chance for isolated downpours in the evening and overnight. Rain should taper by Sunday morning.
Snow levels will quickly drop to around 4,000 feet Saturday afternoon and evening.A dusting to 1" is possible above 4,000 feet. 2" to 4" is possible above 5,000 feet.
Afterwards, most of next week is looking cool with possibly another rain chance arriving early in the week.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 12-26-2016
There is a storm system spinning off the coast of Southern California (image below). This system is cut from the main flow of the jet stream, so it is drifting erratically. These types of systems are very difficult to forecast. Most of the latest computer data shows this system moving our way by Friday. I'm still a bit skeptical. Regardless, there is a slight chance for rain Friday into Saturday.
Computer forecasts are also hinting at another system bringing us rain late Saturday into Sunday. Again, this is a small system and it's track is hard to pinpoint at this time. If the computers are correct, we would see rain late Saturday into early Sunday. This could easily change as the system gets closer to us, so I would keep a close eye to the latest forecast.
I'll bring more updates in the coming days.

SAN DIEGO WEATHER UPDATE: 7 PM FRIDAY 12-23-2016
The forecast is still on track.
10 PM to 4 AM
Rain will overspread the area. During this time, downpours and isolated thunderstorms will be possible, so don't be surprised if you hear some thunder. Snow levels rapidly drop from 8,000 feet to 4,000 feet.
4 AM to 9 AM
Showers slowly start to taper along the coast and inland, though rain and snow continue in the higher elevations. Snow levels will drop as low as 3,000 feet.
9 AM to 11 PM
Most of Saturday looks dry, though I can't completely rule out a stray shower. The snow continues in the mountains until late evening. Wind gusts up to 35 mph are possible for coastal and inland areas, up to 60 mph in the mountains. Winds will subside on Sunday.
Snow Outlook
Above 3,000: 1" to 4"
Above 5,000: 6" to 12"
Above 7,000: 12" to 18"
Above 9,000: 18"+

SAN DIEGO WEATHER UPDATE: 1 PM THURSDAY 12-22-2016
The core of this system is currently weakening and spinning overhead. On the satellite image below, you can see the edge of the clouds out west off the coast. A renegade shower could pop up in the next few hours, especially in the mountains, otherwise, the bulk of the heavy rain is gone. Patchy mist, drizzle and fog will persist through Friday morning.
Another potent cold front is headed this way for tomorrow. An isolated shower could develop ahead of this front on Friday afternoon, however, the best chances for rain will arrive Friday night (roughly 9 PM to 4 AM). Rain and isolated thunderstorms will overspread the area from the north.
Isolated showers will persist until midday Saturday, then we should be mostly dry by Saturday afternoon and evening.
Snow levels will range from 7,000 to 10,000 Friday evening, then rapidly drop to 4,000 to 5,000 Friday night. They could dip as low as 3,500 by Saturday morning.
Early estimates for snow:
Above 3,000: Dusting to 2"
Above 5,000: 3" to 8"
Above 7,000: 12" to 18"
Here is a map showing snow potential.

SAN DIEGO WEATHER UPDATE: WEDNESDAY 12-21-2016
The initial round of rain has left the area. A couple stray showers will be possible this afternoon, then the second round of rain will arrive this evening and overnight. Showers and isolated downpours will persist through midday Thursday. Rain will move into the mountains Thursday afternoon, then most areas will be dry by Thursday night.
I'm still expecting another system to arrive Friday into Saturday. Isolated showers will be possible through the day Friday, however, the best chance for rain arrives Friday night into early Saturday. Scattered showers and isolated downpours/thunderstorms will develop during this time.
Snow levels will range from 7,000 to 10,000 Friday night. They will then rapidly drop to 4,500 to 5,500 Saturday morning. Most precipitation will end by Christmas morning.
Also expect windy conditions Saturday into Sunday morning, especially in the mountains.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED TUESDAY 12-20-2016
A storm system is currently swirling off the coast of the Baja (image below). This system should drift far enough north to give us a chance for rain.
An isolated shower could pop up Wednesday afternoon, however, a better chance for a couple showers will arrive Wednesday night into early Thursday. The rain chance diminishes by late Thursday evening.
Another more impressive system is brewing in the Gulf Of Alaska. This will race into the area Friday into Saturday. Showers and isolated downpours will overspread Southern California Friday evening into Saturday morning. This is a potent storm system, so I can't rule out isolated thunderstorms as well.
Snow levels will range from 9,000 to 11,000 feet Friday night. They will gradually drop through the day on Saturday: 6,000-8,000 in the morning, then 4,000-5,000 in the afternoon and evening. It looks like the higher elevations might wake up to a white Christmas!
I'll bring more updates in the coming days.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WEDNESDAY 12-14-2016
The two storm system are now merging in the Pacific. You can spot the two spirals in the satellite imagery below. They are drawing in a good amount of moisture, so we will see increasing clouds through Thursday.
Rain showers will move into the area Thursday evening and especially Thursday night. The rain will persist though Friday morning. Showers will taper into Friday afternoon.
Snow levels will be fairly high for this event, though there will be snow in the highest peaks of the San Bernardino Mountains.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SUNDAY 12-11-2016
Computer forecasts have been fairly consistent with a chance for rain at the end of the workweek. Regardless, I'm still a little skeptical, given their poor performance over the past couple weeks.
As it stands, there is a storm system currently spinning in the Gulf of Alaska. In addition, there is another system north of Hawaii. You can spot both of them on the satellite imagery below. If the computer forecasts are correct, these systems will merge and head our way late Thursday into early Friday. Best chance for rain would be Friday morning.
This is a tricky forecast, so confidence is somewhat low. I'll continue to monitor it and bring another update once the data solidifies.

WEATHER UPDATE: 11 AM SATURDAY 11-26-2016
Scattered showers will move into the area this afternoon and evening. An isolated downpour and some thunder will also be possible. Intermittent showers will persist on-and-off into Sunday. The rain chance quickly diminishes Sunday evening.
The core of the system is farther east than earlier anticipated, so snow levels will be a bit higher. They should range from 6,000 to 7,000 feet into Sunday and briefly dip to around 5,000 to 6,000 feet as the storm exits Sunday night.
Today inland and coastal winds will range from 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Winds Sunday will range from 20-30 with gusts to 40 mph. In the mountains, expect winds today to range from 35 to 55 mph with gusts to 60 mph. Sunday mountain winds will range from 40-55 mph with gusts to 65 mph. Winds will subside by Monday.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WEDNESDAY 11-23-2016
The active weather pattern will continue this weekend as a storm system dives out of the Gulf of Alaska and into our area. This will be a one-two punch. The first wave of showers will arrive late Saturday when the initial cold front passes. Another round of showers and isolated downpours will arrive on Sunday as the core of the system settles overhead.
This is a cold core system, so parts of the Sierra Nevada will see snow over the weekend. Snow levels could drop as low as 5,000 feet here in Southern California on Sunday.
Expect significantly cooler weather. Temperatures will struggle to into the 60s Saturday. Highs will range from the upper 50s to low 60s on Sunday.
Winds will pick up on Saturday. I'm expecting blustery conditions Sunday into early Monday, especially in higher elevations.
I'll have another update on Friday. Happy Thanksgiving!

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SATURDAY 11-19-2016
A large storm system is currently spinning off the West Coast (you can spot it on the satellite loop below). The core of the system is near the Pacific Northwest. A strong piece of energy will swing under this system and into Southern California.
There is a slight chance for a passing shower Sunday afternoon. A better chance for rain and isolated downpours will arrive Sunday night and into early Monday. Also, don't be surprised if you hear a rumble of thunder. Most of the rain will exit the region by Monday evening.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 11-14-2016
A large storm system is brewing in the the Gulf of Alaska (image below). Unfortunately, the track of the system will stay to the north of our region, so our rain chances are somewhat limited. The front will swing through the area Wednesday and bring a quick chance for showers or possibly an isolated thunderstorm.
Another system will arrive Sunday into Monday. The track could be more favorable for rain. I'll keep an eye on it and bring more updates later in the week.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED TUESDAY 10-25-2016
A fast-moving storm system is brewing in the Pacific (image below). It looks like the brunt of this storm will miss us to the north, though we could see a few showers on Friday.
Generally the pattern will remain unsettled, and we could possibly see another chance for rain within a week.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WEDNESDAY 10-19-2016
Heat will continue to build into the region as the jet stream pushes northward (first image below). Inland temperatures will climb to the mid 80s today, mid 90s Thursday and low 90s Friday.
Luckily this pattern will quickly degrade over the weekend. A large storm system will dive down out of the Gulf of Alaska and park itself in the far Eastern Pacific (second image), just off the California coast.
This system will keep temperatures down starting Sunday and will last through most of next week. In addition, it will bring an occasional chance for rain. Right now it looks like we'll see a little rain on Monday. Beyond that, it's difficult to pinpoint when we could see more. These types of systems are challenging to forecast!
I'll bring more updates in the coming days.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED THURSDAY 10-13-2016
An upper level storm system is currently spinning off the coast of the Pacific Northwest (image below). Another system is developing right behind this system.
While most of the energy will be focused well north of Southern California, it's possible that a stray shower could develop Sunday into Monday (20%).
Luckily this pattern will keep our temperatures comfortably in the 70s, though there are indications that temps will creep into the 80s late next week.

SAN DIEGO WEATHER UPDATE: THURSDAY 9-22-2016
Enjoy the comfortable weather on Friday, because a heat wave is headed to San Diego and all of Southern California. Inland temperatures will climb into the low to mid 90s this weekend (mid to upper 80s along the coast).
We could even see inland temperatures approach 100 early next week (low 90s along the coast). Luckily some heat relief will arrive by the following week.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED 9 PM MONDAY 9-19-2016
Hurricane Paine will rapidly weaken as it moves to the northeast over the next couple days.
There is an upper level low pressure system off the coast of Southern California. This will help to deflect Paine, though I'm still expecting some moisture to reach parts of San Diego County.
Isolated showers and a possible downpour will be possible tonight and Tuesday (40%). I can't can't completely rule out a rumble of thunder either. Isolated showers are still possible Wednesday (30%), then most of the moisture will push eastward by Thursday.
