WEATHER UPDATE: WEDNESDAY 12-31-2025

Light showers are currently moving across the area. These showers will begin to break apart in the afternoon, then isolated showers or a quick downpour will be possible this evening and into tonight.

The core of the system is still a few hundred miles off the coast. You can spot the center of it spiraling in the satellite loop below. This system will drift over Southern California on Thursday.

Showers and isolated downpours will be possible through the day Thursday, though the best chance to encounter heavy rain will be from 6 AM to 5 PM. I should emphasize that this isn't an all day soaking rain, but more of a hit-and-miss scenario.

Isolated thunderstorms are also possible on Thursday.  Keep a close eye to the forecast if you plan to travel because the strongest storms could be intense.

Wind gusts will be 25 to 35 for coastal and inland areas. Mountains will see 45 to 55 mph gusts. Not nearly as windy as that last system.

Snow levels are too high for any accumulations in local mountains. I've posted the computer projection for rainfall totals through Thursday night. Coastal and inland areas will see 0.5 to 1". Mountains will see 1 to 3".

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 12-29-2025

A large storm system is spinning to our south in the Pacific Ocean. You can spot it in the satellite loop below, it's several hundred miles off the coast of Baja California. This system will drift northward in the next couple days and bring rain back to our area.

Because it's coming from the south, it should tap into some humid air, which will enhance our rain potential. This is great news for our local reservoirs!

A renegade shower could develop ahead of the system on Tuesday, then light rain will move in early Wednesday morning, with more steady rain by midday. Showers will become more isolated in the evening as we ring in the New Year.

Another round of rain will then pass the area early Thursday (New Year's Day). The timing is difficult with this one, but it's looking like the best chances for moderate to heavy showers will be from 6 AM to noon. The rain will diminish in the evening on Thursday.

I've posted the computer projection for rain totals in the map below. This is another warm system, so I'm not expecting snow in local mountains.

Another small storm system could arrive on Saturday, 1/3. I'll keep an eye on it and bring updates if needed.

WEATHER UPDATE: WEDNESDAY 12-24-2025

The first batch of rain has moved out of the area. This was just the appetizer ahead of the main storm system.

I've posted a satellite loop below, which shows low level moisture. You can see a moisture plume that goes from the tropics all the way into our area. You can feel the humidity when you step outside. This should enhance the rainfall potential.

Rain will begin to move into the area around 1 PM, though the heaviest will be between 2 to 6 PM, with embedded downpours.

The rain will become more scattered tonight, then isolated showers are possible on Christmas.

Another round of showers will arrive Friday late morning into the afternoon. This round won't be as intense, but will bring a little more rain to the area.

I've posted the computer projection for rainfall below. You can see that the lion's share of rain will be in the mountains around Los Angeles. For San Diego County, coastal areas will see 1 to 2" with mountains seeing 2 to 4".

Snow levels will remain high during this event, so I'm not expecting snow in San Diego mountains.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED FRIDAY 12-19-2025

Rain will be returning to our area early next week. Right now I'm watching a plume of low level moisture that originates near Hawaii and extends all the way to the Oregon coastline. You can spot it on the satellite loop below.

It's the interplay of this moisture along with another plume to our south that will enhance our rain totals as a storm system dives out of the Gulf of Alaska on Tuesday. We should see scattered light showers develop Tuesday morning and into Tuesday night.

The best chances for substantial rain arrives on Wednesday, Christmas Eve. Periods of rain and isolated downpours will be possible throughout the day. Scattered showers and an occasional downpour will persist through Christmas Day.

Showers will diminish by early Friday. Snow levels will remain high, so local mountains won't see snow, however, higher peaks to our north (Big Bear and northward) will see accumulations.

I've posted the computer projections for rain totals below, which show our area getting 2 to 4" of rain. This is a developing situation, so I'll bring updates as needed. If you plan to be traveling on Christmas Eve, I'd keep a close eye to the forecast!
