NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WEDNESDAY 10-21-2020

It's time to dust off the blog and gear up for the upcoming rain season!

All eyes are up in Canada, where a storm system is diving southward towards the Southwest United States (it's hard to spot on the satellite loop below). This will bring Southern California our first rain chance this season. This storm track isn't ideal for substantial rain, but we'll take anything at this point!

Isolated showers are possible on Sunday, then a better chance for showers arrives Monday. Rain totals will be low: less than a quarter inch. We will also get a taste of some cooler air next week.

Looking at the long term weather pattern, we are going to experience a La Nina winter. I've included water temperature anomalies below. You can spot the cooler water off the west coast of Peru.

La Nina typically brings warm and dry weather for winter in Southern California. The cool water temperatures are fairly deep, which means that this La Nina should persist through most of winter. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, however, it's not looking good for rainfall this winter. I'll keep watching the pattern and bring updates.
