NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED 9 PM THURSDAY 1-28-2016

The next storm system is right on track for this upcoming Sunday (first map). It's been a well-behaved system, so there has been no need to update the original forecast. Most of Southern California will see scattered showers Sunday into early Monday. It will also turn cooler and windy Sunday and Monday.

This rain chance will be short-lived. A weak ridge in the jet stream will bring us mild and mainly dry conditions for most of next workweek (second map).

In fact, this ridge strengthens into the second week of February (third map). This could possibly equate to a prolonged period of dry and warm weather. If the ridge migrates farther north, we might be able to get a storm system to sneak in underneath. Regardless, I don't see much rain in our long term forecast.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED 10 PM FRI 1-22-2016

An upper level storm system currently spinning off the Pacific NW Coast (seen on the water vapor loop below) will tap into some energy/moisture from the south. This will bring us cloudy skies on Saturday. We also have a chance for an isolated shower from 4 PM to 10 PM (30%).

I'm keeping an eye on a potential shift in the weather pattern for the end of the month. Most of next week looks dry and warm (second map). Most computer forecasts are then hinting at a storm system and cooler weather around Sunday 1/31 (third map). This is still far into the future, so a lot can change. I'll monitor it and bring more updates.

SAN DIEGO WEATHER RECAP FOR 2015

Generally speaking, 2015 was a very warm year with about average rainfall. The average temperature was 67.5, which is 3.9 degrees above average. The total rainfall was 9.89", which is 0.45 below the average of 10.34". I've included a month-by-month breakdown below:

This next map shows the percentage of normal precipitation, which helps to spot which areas were abnormally dry. You can see that most of the state was hurting for rain. Although rainfall was slightly below normal in San Diego, most of California was much below normal. However, in regards to rainfall (or lack thereof) no records were broken this year  The next two maps show temperatures across the entire country. NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 1-18-2016

A fast-moving storm system will pass the area on Tuesday. The brunt of the storm will be well north of San Diego. Regardless, we will have a chance for a few light showers or patchy drizzle tomorrow evening and tomorrow night (40%). Best chances will be roughly 4 PM Tuesday to 6 AM Wednesday.

Another system will approach the area this Saturday. Right now, this system doesn't look too impressive. We will see an increase in clouds, but the chances for rain are looking slim. I'll keep watching it and bring more updates.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED FRIDAY 1-8-2015

A small storm system will pass the area over the weekend. It will bring the chance for a few showers, however, I'm not expecting anything near what we saw earlier this week. More than likely we will get less than a quarter inch of rainfall. The best chances for rain will be from 12 AM to 12 PM Sunday.
