NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SUNDAY 5-14-2017

A storm system is approaching our area from the northwest. You can spot it in the satellite loop below. This system will bring us a chance for a few showers on Monday. The rain chance will quickly diminish by Tuesday. Rain totals should stay below 0.5".

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED FRIDAY 4-7-2017

A weak front will pass the area early Saturday morning. It will bring a brief chance for some showers, though the bulk of the rain will miss us to the north. Rain chances diminish by the afternoon. Temperatures will stay comfortably cool through the weekend.

Another chance for rain will arrive by the end of next workweek, though it also will miss us to the north. Regardless, it's worth watching in the upcoming days.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 3-20-2017

A large storm system is spinning off the West Coast. It looks impressive on the satellite loop below. This system will glide overhead on Wednesday. Scattered showers and isolated downpours will be possible during this time. We could even see an isolated thunderstorm Wednesday night, so don't be surprised if you hear a rumble or two. The computer forecast rain totals are below.

Snow levels will stay above 8,000 feet all day Wednesday, then drop as low as 5,000 feet by Thursday morning as the system exits. The highest mountains in San Diego County could get some snow, though most of the accumulations will be in the San Bernardino Mountains and into the Sierras. The computer forecast snow totals are below.

Another system could pass the area on Saturday, however, it doesn't look too impressive.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED THURSDAY 2-23-2017

There are a couple small storm systems headed this way by the end of the weekend. You can see the first spinning over Alaska. The second system is right behind. Both systems will bring a chance for showers late Sunday into Monday. I've also attached a preliminary look at computer forecast rain accumulations. Obviously these will change a bit as the systems move closer and the data becomes more reliable.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIGO: UPDATED THURSDAY 2-16-2017

The next storm system is brewing in the Pacific Ocean right now. You can spot the jet stream energy in the upper left of the water vapor loop below (first map). It's going to tap into a decent amount of moisture. You can see the moisture plume in the second map below. Here is a rough timeline of the storm:

FRIDAY
7 AM to 4 PM: Stray isolated shower possible (30%) Snow levels 10,000 to 12,000 feet.
4 PM to 12 AM: Rain moves in from the west. Embedded within the showers will be heavy downpours. (100%) Snow levels 6,000 to 9,000 feet.

SATURDAY
12 AM to 7 AM: The heaviest rain exits the region. (100%) Snow levels 6,000 to 8,000 feet.
7 AM to 7 PM: Isolated showers, or brief downpour will be possible. (60%) Snow levels 5,000 to 6,000 feet.

SUNDAY
7 AM to 7 PM: Lingering isolated shower possible. (30%) Snow levels 5,000 to 6,000 feet.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 2-13-2017

Rain is looking likely for the end of the workweek and into the upcoming weekend. Showers and occasional downpours will be possible Friday and especially into Friday night (90%). Isolated showers will persist into Saturday (60%) and possibly Sunday (30%).

The latest computer data suggests the system is trending slower and farther south (first map below is yesterday's data, the second map is from today). If this trend continues, the highest rain totals could miss us to the south. Regardless, we could still get a good soaking from this system.

Another rain chance will arrive early next week - possibly next Tuesday or Wednesday.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 2-6-2017

A few showers will be possible today and tomorrow as a front passes the area. Rain totals won't be too impressive, but we'll take whatever we can get.

Another system passes late Friday into Friday night. Scattered showers are possible, however, the brunt of the storm will miss us to the north.

Then we will see a period of warm and dry weather from Sunday, 2/12 to Wednesday, 2/15 (indicated in red on the first map below).

Afterwards, long range computer forecasts are now hinting at a stormy and wet period headed this way by the end of next workweek, starting roughly around 2/16 to 2/17 (indicated in blue on the second map below). This is definitely worth watching because it could bring substantial rainfall to most of Southern California. I'll bring more updates in the coming days.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SUNDAY 1-29-2017

Clear and mild weather persists this weekend as high pressure continues to hover over Southern California. There is a large and weakening storm system in the Pacific. You can spot it in the upper left of the satellite loop below. This system will bring a slight chance for some showers on Friday, though the bulk of the rain will miss us to the north.

Afterwards, almost every long range computer forecast keeps most of California dry and warm (you can spot the red bubble on the second map below). The computers have been consistent with this scenario, so my confidence is high in the forecast. It's plausible that we won't see rain through the second week of February...maybe longer. As always, a renegade system could sneak in underneath this ridge. I'll continue to monitor the data and keep you posted.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 1-23-2017

Isolated showers will linger tonight and through most of Tuesday. Most areas should be dry by Tuesday evening. Snow levels will hover around 4,000 feet. Here are the forecast accumulations:

1 to 4" from 4,000 feet to 5,000 feet.
4 to 8" from 5,000 feet to 6,000 feet
8"+ above 6,000 feet

After Tuesday, we are headed towards an extended period of dry weather. Cold mornings and sunny afternoons will persist into the weekend. You can spot the dominant weather feature on the map below.

There are indications that this pattern could break down around February 1-2 with rain returning to the area. I'll keep you posted.

SNOW FORECAST SAN DIEGO COUNTY: SUNDAY 1-22-2017

Here are is a computer forecast (NAM 10:1 ratio) for snow totals with this system. With snow levels dropping as low as 4,000 feet by Monday, I'm still expecting Cuyamaca and Laguna to get a few inches of snow as well.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WEDNESDAY 1-18-2017

A series of storm systems will affect all of Southern California over the next several days. I'll try and break it down into a timeline:

Thursday
Scattered showers are likely with isolated downpours possible. Winds 15-25 mph, 50 mph gusts in the mountains.
AM snow levels: ~7,000 feet
PM snow levels: ~6,000 feet

Friday into early Saturday
Rain likely, heavy at times. This system is more potent, so rain totals will be higher. In addition, isolated thunderstorms are possible. Winds 15-30 mph, 60 mph gusts in the mountains.
AM snow levels: ~6,000 feet
PM snow levels: ~5,000 feet

Sunday
Another potent system headed this way. Rain is likely with isolated downpours, possibly a thunderstorm. Winds 10-20 mph, 50 mph gusts in the mountains.
AM snow levels: ~11,000 feet
PM snow levels: ~7,000 feet (steadily dropping)

Monday into Tuesday
Scattered showers. This will be the coolest system of the four. Snow levels could dip down to 4,000 feet. Winds 15-30 mph, 60 mph gusts in the mountains.

By the end of all of this, rain totals could range from 3 to 6" with significantly higher amounts expected in the mountains. The 5 day computer forecast is posted below.

I'll continue to bring updates throughout the event!

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SATURDAY 1-14-2016

The unsettled weather pattern will persist for at least another two weeks. Computer forecasts continue to show a cool and wet anomaly over the entire Western United States (shown below). This means we will have several chances for rain in the coming days. In addition, temperatures will generally remain below normal.

The first system arrives Thursday and it will immediately be followed by more rain on Friday. In fact, it's looking like the rain chance will linger into next weekend as well. It's still too early to pinpoint the exact timing of these systems, but if you are going to be outdoors, I'd plan accordingly.
