NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SATURDAY 1-28-2023

Our next storm system is diving down the western coast of Canada. You can see its trajectory in the computer projected upper level wind animation below. The storm will slow down as it settles overhead here in Southern California on Monday.

Spotty light showers will develop on Sunday ahead of the storm. Then intermittent showers with embedded downpours will be possible through Monday with the storm overhead. Rain will exit the region Tuesday morning. I've posted computer projected rain totals below. Rain totals will range from 1-2" across the coast into the mountains.

Snow levels will also drop as colder air moves in with the storm. Here are the expected snow levels:

Sunday Morning: 8,000-9,000 feet
Sunday Afternoon: 4,500-5,500 feet
Monday Morning: 4,000-5,000 feet
Monday Afternoon: 4,000-5,000 feet
Tuesday Morning: 4,000-5,000 feet

I've included the computer projected snow totals below, which shows local mountains getting several inches of snow. Be sure to check with the San Diego National Weather Service for the latest in weather advisories and warnings. You can also visit CalTrans for the latest road conditions.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WEDNESDAY 1-18-2023

A front is currently moving across Northern California. You can the associated showers on this evening's radar loop below. This front will bring us a brief chance for showers late tomorrow.

The best chance for rain will be between 4 PM to midnight when isolated showers are possible (30%). I've posted rain projections below.

Afterwards, we are heading towards a dry period for at least a week, perhaps two. I'll keep an eye on the pattern and have updates.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED 10 AM SATURDAY 1-14-2023

The next storm system is now on our doorstep. The core of the system is spiraling off the coast of Northern California. You can spot it on the satellite loop below. It's funneling in clouds this morning and rainfall is inching closer to San Diego County.

Rain will move into our area over the next couple hours. Showers will intensify from 7 PM to midnight. Rain will then become more isolated from midnight to 10 AM Sunday, though a passing shower could linger in the mountains.

We should see a brief break in rainfall from noon to 5 PM Sunday, then another round of showers will overspread the area from 6 PM Sunday through 11 AM Monday. A passing shower is still possible Monday evening and Monday night, especially in the mountains. Then the rain chance completely diminishes Tuesday late morning.

Here are the snow level projections:

Saturday Afternoon: 7,000-8,000
Sunday Morning: 6,000-7,000
Sunday Afternoon: 5,500-6,500
Monday Morning: 5,500-6,500
Monday Afternoon: 4,500-5,500
Tuesday Morning: 4,000-5,000 feet

I've included the computer projected rain and snow totals below. Coastal and inland rain totals will range from 1-2" and mountain areas could see 2-5" of rainfall through Tuesday morning.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SATURDAY 1-7-2022

A storm system is currently passing to our north and bringing rain to Northern California. This system will bring us clouds tonight and the slightest chance for light rain (<10%).

I'm keeping a closer eye on the next system developing near the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. You can spot it in the upper left corner of the satellite loop below.

This system will bring us rain Monday night into Tuesday. Showers will be possible through the day Tuesday. Isolated downpours and thunderstorms will also be possible as the core of the system passes overhead. The rain chance will diminish by Wednesday morning.

Snow levels will remain high though Tuesday, though they will briefly dip to 5,000 feet as the system exits. However, I'm not expecting accumulations in local mountains.

I've post computer projected rain and snowfall through Wednesday morning.

Another system will arrive next weekend and bring more rain. It's still very far away, so I'm sure there will be some adjustments to the forecast as it approaches. I'll keep you posted!

2022 was a cool and dry year in San Diego, while inland and mountain areas were hot and dry. The chart below shows that every month had below average temperatures except for August and September, which both were significantly above average. Almost every month had below average rainfall except for March and September.

Here is a map that shows total rainfall across the entire state of California.

This map helps to show that most of California had below average rainfall.

Although dry, no areas were near record-breaking dry.

Most of California was significantly warmer than average. You can see that coastal and inland San Diego County were cool, while farther inland and the mountains were very warm.

In fact, some parts of inland San Diego County experienced record-breaking heat. Other parts of California also broke records.

This map below shows total precipitation across the entire United States

California wasn't the only dry state. Nevada, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa also has below average precipitation.

Parts of New Mexico saw record-breaking rainfall from an active monsoon season. Areas of Florida also experienced record-breaking rains from an active hurricane season. Some states near the Canadian border were also wet.

While most of the country experienced near or above average temperatures, the northern Plains were very cold. New England and Florida were warmer than average.

Some isolated areas in Minnesota and Wisconsin saw record-breaking cold conditions.

I've attached below the monthly precipitation maps across our area.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 1-2-2023

Light showers are currently moving across the area. Rain will intensify tonight with periods of moderate rain (100%). Showers will break apart by the late morning hours of Tuesday, though an isolated shower is possible into the early evening (30%).

Another round of light rain will pass the area Tuesday night into Wednesday morning (60%).

The best chance for substantial rain will arrive Thursday morning as a small but potent storm system passes the area (90%). Showers and isolated downpours will be possible through the morning and into the early afternoon.

Snow levels will remain fairly high, so I'm not expecting any snow accumulations in local mountains.

I've included computer projections for rain and snow totals through Thursday afternoon.

I'm also keeping an eye on another system that could arrive early next week. I'll bring more updates!
