NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SUNDAY 3-9-2025

Our next storm system is a few hundred miles off the coast and headed our way (seen in the satellite loop below). Showers and isolated downpours will be possible through the day on Tuesday. Snow levels will remain fairly high: ranging from 6,000 to 7,500 feet.

The next storm system will then dive out of the Gulf Of Alaska. Patchy drizzle and light rain are possible Wednesday, however, the real show arrives early Thursday as the front blasts into the area. Rain and downpours/thunderstorms will be possible early Thursday. Then showers will persist into Thursday afternoon.

One last round of scattered showers will pass the area on Friday, with things finally drying off Friday night.

Snow levels will start at 6,000-8,000 feet Thursday morning, then drop to 3,500-5,000 feet Thursday evening into Thursday night. Significant snow accumulations are possible in local mountains late Thursday, so keep a close eye to the latest advisories from the National Weather Service!

Yet another storm system could impact the area around Monday 3/17 to Wednesday, 3/19.

I've posted the computer projections for rain and snow totals through Friday (below).

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED WEDNESDAY 2-26-2025

After a long period of dry and warm weather, the pattern is about to become more active with cooler temperatures and chances for rain.

Saturday, 3/1
The first chance for rain arrives early Saturday as a small system passes overhead. This system is weak, and moisture is limited, so only a quick shower or two will pop up. Sunday looks cloudy, cool and mostly dry.

Monday, 3/3
The next system arrives early next week. This system is bigger and will tap into moisture from the south. Computer forecasts have slowed this storm and shifted it north - a trend to watch in the coming days.

As it stands, rain should arrive late Sunday night, then showers will be possible through Monday evening. An isolated shower is still possible in the mountains into early Tuesday.

Snow levels will be fairly high, though the highest peaks in San Diego County could see a quick changeover to snow.

I've posted the rain and snow projections through Tuesday morning below.

Wednesday, 3/5
This system is looking impressive. Be cautioned though, the computers are still erratic with the placement and timing of this storm, so the forecast will change some in the coming days.

Regardless, the computers are becoming a little more consistent with the scenario. Rain with isolated downpours are possible. Again, snow levels look fairly high, though local mountains should see some snow.

This is an evolving situation, so be sure to check forecasts for updates on timing and rain projections.

Tuesday, 3/11 to Thursday 3/13
Long range computer projections are also hinting at a storm around this time period. Snow levels could be lower with this system. This is far into the future, plus I'm skeptical given the overall trend this winter, however, I'll keep watching it and bring updates.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED SUNDAY 2-9-2025

It looks like we finally have a legitimate chance at some good rainfall in our area. A storm system is brewing in the Western Aleutian Islands of Alaska, thousands of miles away.

A small storm will race ahead of this system and bring us showers on-and-off through Wednesday.

We will then have a better chance for moderate showers Thursday, especially late in the day. As the core of the system approaches, moderate showers and isolated downpours will be possible Thursday night into early Friday. A few showers will linger into Friday afternoon, then things will dry out in the evening.

Like most of this season, snow levels will stay fairly high, so snow chances are pretty slim for local mountains in San Diego County. There will be a brief changeover as the core of the system passes late Friday.

I've posted the computer projected rain and snow totals below. Rain totals will range from 1 to 4" across the County. We need it!

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED MONDAY 2-3-2025

There is a fairly large storm system spinning off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. You can spot it on the satellite loop below. This system will draw in smaller waves of energy and moisture, bringing us a few quick chances for rain this week.

The first one is approaching to our west and will bring a few light showers Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Another one will arrive Wednesday night into early Thursday, where patchy light rain or drizzle will be possible.

The last one will bring us a better chance for moderate rainfall on Friday, though rain totals will still remain fairly limited.

Snow levels will remain high, so most local mountains might see a quick changeover to snow before the system exits Friday afternoon. The weekend is looking dry and pleasantly cool.

I've posted the computer projected rain and snow totals below.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE SAN DIEGO: UPDATED THURSDAY 1-23-2024

A mild La Nina has dominated our weather pattern so far this rain season. For this reason, I was quite skeptical when computer forecasts showed rain for this weekend. However, the computers continue to show rain heading this way, so it's impossible to ignore.

The satellite loop below shows a chaotic pattern over the Pacific. There's a decaying large system north of Hawaii and another vortex spinning far off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. I'm keeping an eye up north, where eventually a piece of energy will dive southward out of the Gulf of Alaska and buckle the upper level flow pattern (the jet stream).

A system will emerge and bring us showers by Saturday afternoon and evening. Intermittent showers will then be possible through the day on Sunday. This system is somewhat moisture-starved, so rain totals will be limited. Regardless, we'll take what we can get.

Isolated showers will persist into Monday as the core of the system settles overhead. There's enough instability in the air to support isolated thunderstorms, which could bring a brief heavy downpour and possibly some small hail.

The rain chance diminishes Tuesday morning. Snow levels will dip low enough on Monday for some snow in local San Diego mountains. Levels could dip to 3,500 during that time period. Be sure to keep an eye on road conditions if you plan to travel in higher elevations on Sunday and Monday.

I've posted the computer projected rain and snow totals below.

I'm also keeping an eye on another small system around the 2-5 to 2-8 time frame, though this is far away and the overall weather pattern is a dry one. We'll see!

SAN DIEGO 2024 RECAP: RAINFALL AND TEMPERATURES

Overall temperatures were cooler than normal throughout 2024. July, August and September were the exceptions with warmer than normal temps.

It was a wet start to the year with heavy rains in January, February and March, though we haven't received much rain since. The overall total puts us in a surplus for the year.

Here are the rain totals across the state.

Rain totals were generally above average across the western side of the state. Conditions were drier than normal along the Sierras and to the southwest, where conditions were exceptionally dry.

This map further shows the disparity of rainfall across the state, where the Northern CA saw much above rainfall, where Southwest CA saw much below normal.

This is an interesting map, which shows temperatures across the state. It was cooler than normal from Santa Barbara down to San Diego. These coastal areas were the exception. Most of the state experienced warmer than normal conditions.

In fact, the map below shows that a lot of areas saw record-breaking heat along the Sierras and to the southwest.

Here are the precipitation totals across the country.

The map below shows the percentage of normal precip. A lot of the Southwest was very dry, while parts of the South saw excessive rainfall due to hurricane season.

Parts of the Northern Midwest, Texas and Louisiana had record-breaking precipitation.

It was an extremely warm year across the entire United States, where almost every state experienced above average temperatures.

This map shows which areas saw extraordinary heat. Much of the Northeast, Texas and Southwest experienced record-breaking heat (2024 was the hottest on record).

As always, here are the monthly rain totals across our area.
